Karel Lidický was born in Hlinsko. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under Prof. Spaniel. He is one of the most important authors of Czech classical portraiture, a continuator of the monumental realist tradition of J. V. Myslbek. In 1931 he began to work as an independent sculptor. He took part in exhibitions of the Nezávislí group and, thanks to positive art reviews, was accepted into the Umělecká beseda. After the war, he worked as a teacher and from 1967 to 1973 as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts. Among other things, he contributed to the artistic design of the Lidice Memorial, where he created a statue of a woman protecting her face from the flames of the burning village at the foundations of the Lidice church.
