From the assessment by PhDr. Naděžda Blažíčková-Horová: “This view from the Island of Capri to the seaside landscape around this island in the Gulf of Naples is an unquestionable and beautiful work by painter Beneš Knüpfer, probably dating from the early 20th century. Knüpfer was an important figure of Neo-romanticism and natural sensualism in Czech painting in the late 19th century. An emotionally toned nature scene, Island of Capri is a psychological study of nature’s moods in a realistic section of the rocky seashore seen through a wall of pink and red roses in the foreground. Island of Capri is unquestionably a masterpiece from Knüpfer’s oeuvre. The painting is also interesting for the missing figurative staffage that dominate most of the artist’s paintings.”
