From the assessment by PhDr. Anna Janištinová, “Max Liebermann regularly spent his summers on the Dutch coast, where he watched and painted the life of local people and spa-goers in numerous studies and paintings. He painted studies en plein air, often on paperboard; in some cases he would later make final versions in the studio. This work can be placed among his studies, although the details and signature demonstrate that the artist himself considered the work finished. The overall execution testifies to Lieberman’s excellent knowledge of horse anatomy and his absolute mastery of foreshortening. Showcase quality. The motif of the horse, with or without riders, appears relatively often in Liebermann’s work, especially after 1900. Liebermann rode from the time he was a boy.”
