Cara marble. Marked on bottom right: “L GUIGUES”. Stickers with inscription on back: Guigues / Louis / Bessèges 16 /15/14
This small marble sculpture of an enchanting female seminude, seemingly emerging from the rock material, depicts the young woman’s pleased mental state. Her head is lightly tilted, eyes closed and mouth indicating a smile, with her rich wavy hair framing her face and falling around her shoulders. The artist is French sculptor Louis-Jacques Guigues, a student of Alfréd Boucher and later of August Rodin. When Boucher won the Salon Award for La Piété Filiale in 1881, he encouraged and inspired a new generation of sculptors, including Guigues, Laure Coutan and Camille Claudel.
In 1922–1925 Guigues was appointed director of Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Montpellier.
