Representative of Drtikol's stylized composition with avant-garde dance and geometric elements, the photograph is charged with the explosive poses of the dancer and movement. The dynamics enhance the play with light and cast shadows. It dates from an important period in the artist's career, after he had earned considerable acclaim. In 1922 he held his first solo exhibition at the Museum of Decorative Arts, and in 1925 he received the Grand Prix at the International Exhibition in Paris. During the economic crisis of the 1930s, however, he grappled with severe financial problems and later started to focus more on religious philosophy. After his death in 1961, Drtikol's photography fell into oblivion; the legendary 1972 exhibition by photography historian and theorist Anna Fárová shed light for the world on his oeuvre again. Consulted with Vladimír Birgus.
