This undeservedly neglected artist studied at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague under František Ženíšek from 1885 to 1893. He lived in Paris from 1902 - 1909. Starting in 1913 he taught nude drawing at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design and was later made full professor. Špillar's artistic interests mainly centered around women and female nudes. His work went beyond Ženíšek's academic mannerism, however; in the Art Nouveau spirit Špillar brought his works to life and lent them a chaste sensuality. This work comes from a major Prague collection. Oil on canvas, original frame, signed on the right at the top: Karel Špillar.
