A large, impressive hand-knotted wool warp rug with a coveted Persian design that stunned customers around the world in the 19th century, it originated in northwestern Persia in the Bijar region, named after the Kurdish village of Garrus where the first examples of this all-over composition began. The whole refers to the idea of a lush garden of Eden, where palmettes and flowers are linked by tendrils with mysterious dominant blue arabesques. The palette of colours imitates ancient carpets, and the wide abstract border is traditional, with alternating palmettes of different colours and shapes, surrounded by zigzag bands dominated by green ornaments, reminiscent of chopped palmettes.
