Vlastimil Beneš (1919 - 1981) A PLATE

This colored plate featuring Social Civilist motifs and scratched decorations is a unique form of Beneš’s artistic expression. While it presents subjects that were important to him – the city, urban life, human population and progress – he tended to leave human figures out of his compositions, expressing human existence through their visible legacy. The relaxed and humorous motifs along the perimeter of the plate are arranged around a building, which he placed in the center. Cityscapes appear in his paintings with relative frequency. Along the perimeter is the partially smudged inscription: “MCMLXV PRAHA STRAŠNICE SOLIDARITA… 42…VLASTMIL BENEŠ MVP”
