Sculptor and medalist Olga Hendrychová Tobolková studied under Professor Španiel at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. She exhibited at the Artists of the Nation exhibitions in 1941–1942, and participated in competitions (St. Adalbert, twenty Czechoslovak koruna coin). The main body of Tobolková’s work focuses on portraits, especially children. She made portraits of famous figures from her time; a new exhibition in the National Museum will show her 1938 bust of Edvard Beneš. Unfortunately, she ended her career early and her work appears only rarely, even though it is technically superb. This sculpture of a newborn baby is certainly proof of her exquisite sense for portraying the subject as it actually is, which is particularly stricking when in direct contact with the work.
