Oil on canvas.
Signed lower left: “E. Vernet/ 1844”.
This painting dates from the artist’s prime, following his first trip to Munich. The romantic subject with a Bedouin and an Arab presenting a horse is based on excellent draftsmanship and the use of light in painting, which is typical for high Romanticism. In addition to the accurate drawing and sense of elegance in the horse, the painting also testifies to Vernet’s ability to capture the light of the sun and the entire Oriental atmosphere. The cultivated painting brings together precise three-dimensional and painstakingly detailed modulation and brilliant brushwork, with the fine porcelain-smooth finish of the canvas meeting with high acclaim. In this regard as well the painting is an example of the artist’s mastery as a painter, which brought him fame as a painter both in his native France and abroad. A historical painter who himself came from a famous family of painters, Vernet studied under Jacques-Louis David and Anne-Louis Girodet de Roussy. In 1826 he became a Professor at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His work was based on the tenants of French Romanticism, which was characterized by Orientalism. He also personally undertook expeditions to Africa.
