Oil on wood panel. Signed lower right: “MATAL 75”. Matal was the youngest member of Group 42, adopting the art group's program at the launch of his career. From portraying the outskirts of the city and Social Civilist subjects Matal progressed to abstraction with geometric elements, which fundamentally resonated in his work primarily in the liberal period of the 1960s. This lot is a typical work from the peak of his geometric period, which arched a period from the 1960s to the end of his lifetime, bringing together minimal expression with bold, almost sharp colorism.
