Throughout his life, Ladislav Zívr strove towards simplicity and fullness of shape – the ideal – which he brought in part from his family's tradition of pottery making. In creating his art, relief, and portrait sculptures, he went through several periods of development – Late Cubism, Surrealism, Gutfreundesque Civilismem and symbolic spiritualism. A fascination with death and association with organic, biological shapes are typical for Zívr. By experimenting with the material closest to him, earth, he invented his own technique of moulage (combining natural materials with liquid plaster). "Head" is part of a series he created during the war, when he co-founded Group 42 and was the only sculptor active in the art group. Published in the artist's monograph: Ladislav Zívr, Jaromír Typlt, Kant, 2013, no. 85 in list of works.
