At first look, this rare painting from Josef Hlinomaz's early period seems different from the rest of his oeuvre. Primarily a comedy actor, Hlinomaz was a partly self-taught painter abd major naïve artist. Most of his paintings are brightly colored, comical, often epic compositions that feature many figures. The darker color and certain level of anxiety in this painting set it apart from his recognizable and expected style; however, the absurdly grotesque scene is familiar.
