Miloš Jiránek occupies an important place in the evolution of Czech modern painting. Although his life was short, he managed to help establish the Mánes Union of Fine Artists, start the art journal Volné směry, and organize the important Rodin (1902) and Munch (1905) exhibitions in Prague. He studied at the Academy under Maximilián Pirner and Vojtěch Hynais; his numerous travels, especially to France, were an important part of his learning. Professor Jiří Kotalík, who prepared a Jiránek exhibition in 1997, considers the painter's oeuvre to be one of the most cultivated artistic expressions in early 20th century painting in Bohemia. This painting is related to his White Studies, which are dated around 1910 and are among the masterpieces of Jiránek's brief career. Oil on paperboard.
