Originally a Croatian painter, Vlaho Bukovac travelled the world and in 1903 joined the Academy of Fine Arts as a professor. He was renowned as an accomplished potraitist, but his repertoire also includes landscapes and symbolist scenes such as the submitted Najada or the characteristically related Andromeda from the near period of its creation. The sensuous female figures often mirror the stories, dreams and unconsciousness that rises out of the water.
