Vojtěch Bartoněk worked as a portraitist, primarily as a painter of genre scenes with a humorous or sentimental setting from the countryside and the streets and corners of Prague. His realistically conceived portraits were reproduced numerous times in Světozor and Zlatá Praha magazines. The optically perfectly rendered textures of the Sitting Girl portrait testify to its absolutely justified popularity. Bartoněk studied at the Prague Academy of Arts in 1873-1889, went through the studios of E. Roma, A. Lhoty, F. Sequence and finished his studies in the studio of M. Pirner. After finishing his studies, he went to Paris for a year, where at that time a large group of Czech artists lived, which he joined.
