PAIRED PAINTINGS - A WOUNDED PHILOCTETES
18. Jahrhundert
128,5 x 94,5 cm (h x b)

Paired images with the mythological theme of Philoctetes' injury by a poisoned arrow. According to Sophocles' work, he was supposed to enter the sanctuary of the nymph by mistake, after which the island of Chryse was named. One version talks about being bitten by a snake, but another about poisoned arrows. The composition overflowing with fauns and nymphs suggests that this is a scene from this island. Philoctetes is holding the poisoned arrow in his left hand.
