ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

Detailed Baroque carving with the theme of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The story is based on apocryphal literature and the Catholic tradition, which spread mainly in the Baroque period with the Marian cult. In fine arts, the theme is referred to as an assumpta, where the Virgin Mary is most often depicted with angelic choirs with a view of heaven. In a statue with a dynamic gesture reminiscent of prayer, it floats on a cloud with four expressively placed angels. The Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary falls on August 15 and is an important Christian holiday.
