František Bílek (1872 - 1941) IN HIM YOU WERE TORTURED

František Bílek's mystical visions were profound and real. He met God in dreams and experienced God in his inner self. Through these visions he projected the divine presence into his works. The present drawing belongs to the thematic area of the related woodcut "In Him She Was Crowned with Thorns". It is probably a design for a woodcut, which corresponds to the indicated vertical hatching with the author's typography. Christ here appears as a seeing mystic, as a state of the soul that looks at the woes of crucifixion beyond matter and pain. The medium of wood was not chosen for the sculptures or the prints at random. František Bílek perceived trees as a mirror of life, in which it is possible to see the diversity of divine truth. From his childhood, he was in his father's wheelwright's workshop and subsequently set up his first workshop himself in Chýnov, which was essentially a shed among the mature old trees. Framed under anti-reflective glass with UV filter.
