LARGE HERIZ RUG

The hand-knotted solid wool rug on cotton warp presents a very classic design with a central geometric medallion (here in a rather unique and gracefully layered star shape) and a flamboyant wide floral border with fanciful large palmettes. The entire composition is dominated by highly stylized and geometrized natural motifs of leaves, ruffles and flowers, which have long represented a remarkable and successful fusion of the Persian and Caucasian repertoires. The design of these durable carpets became established in the second half of the 19th century and is rightly regarded as extremely timeless, suitable, among other things, for aristocratic dining rooms and reception halls, but also for any large and open interiors where the subtle colour palette in the bold medallion composition is appropriate. The thoughtful blue elements in the design and the particularly broad green contours of the central red field contribute to the originality of this very traditional Heriz.
