Hours of this caliber were at one time an indicator of wealth and status. The relatively expensive picture clock with a massive gilded frame is a period example of the work of the French watchmaker Aubineau in Strasbourg, which was famous for its relatively unusual clock models and interesting designs for the Biedermeier period. The masterfully painted landscape with a church and a river is not just an adjustment of the clock mechanism, but in the true sense of the word a very decent painting.
