Kotík studied at the UMPRUM and the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and during the 1920s he became a member of major art associations; the Mánes Society of Artists and the Art Discussion Society. Here he met the artists K. Holan, M. Holý and K. Kotrba, with whom he co-founded the Social Group HoHoKoKo in 1924, which focused on realistic themes and social topics. Many layers can be found in Kotík's work; from expressionism and fauvism in his early works, cubism and neoclassicism from the 1920s, to a touch of surrealism in the 1950s. In his paintings, he plays out stories of lovers in cafes, working-class peasants, or people clarifying their existence in the face of modern civilization.
