The painting depicts a group of drinkers, led by the corpulent Bacchus and satyrs, enjoying themselves with music and flirting with nymphs. The iconography of the god of wine and various themes associated with him have been a popular subject since the Renaissance. It often has an allegorical or moralistic meaning, which in our case can be read as an admonition against earthly pleasures and vanity.
