Jan Syrový took part in the Battle of Zborov, in which he lost his right eye on 2 July 1917. Later he became a commander of the legions in Russia. He returned home a general and a hero. During World War II, as an army commander, he was faced with what he described as a superhuman task and decided not to resist the Nazi armed forces in order to save lives. He was later branded a collaborator and cleared only in 2022.
