Kandinsky created the Comets in 1938 for the magazine Verve. At the time, Kandinsky had fled Germany after the Nazi campaign against the Bauhaus art school where he taught. While in Paris, Kandinsky began to feel increasingly isolated and underwent a noticeable shift in his artistic style. His works began to express more biomorphic shapes and elements and take on more subtle tones. During this time, a calmer tone often appears in many of his works.
