Václav Špála was a member of many important artistic associations and groups, especially the Osma and Tvrdošíjní groups, with whom he exhibited. In his search for a striking and immediately effective expression, Špála did not hesitate to apply the principles of post-cubist shape deformation, which he accentuated even more in his graphic art.
