Although today Rudolf Bém is a slightly forgotten author, in his time his work was sought after by many well-known personalities. His landscape work stands out for its subtlety and virtuosic shading. After the establishment of the independent Czechoslovak state, he decided to fundamentally change his artistic life. He adopted the name Vratislav Hlava in 1919 due to patriotic motives.
