Alois Kalvoda is one of the leading Czech landscape painters of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. From 1892 to 1898 he studied at the Academy under Professor Julius Mařák. The loose brushstrokes, the suppression of strict academic contours, the play of light on the water surface and hints of branches or bunches of grasses all point to the artist's consistent study of the French Impressionists, especially Claude Monet. The undulating and "floating" brushstrokes, which contrast with the minutely detailed records of the surrounding vegetation, demonstrate a masterful grasp of technique.
