Ludwig Munthe (1841 - 1896) NÄCHTLICHE STRASSE

Ludwig Munthe was born in Sogn og Fjordane, Norwegian district, and studied painting at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf, Germany. He could be almost certainly called a master painter of winter. His virtuoso landscape painting has produced many beautiful scenes of the city and the countryside, also coast and the ports. He liked to point out the contrast of the white snow and the early evening sky, or the red tones of the sunset. The Street at night scene shows sensitive work with light and its reflections from cobblestones wet with melting snow. Pleasantly warm accents can be found in street lamps and nearby windows of houses.
