Jiří Anderle (1936) FOUR HORSEMEN OF THE APOCALYPSE

In his work, Jiří Anderle often returned to famous authors, whom he admired and paid tribute to through the graphics he created. The four horsemen of the apocalypse are a paraphrase of Albrecht Dürer's woodcut depicting Death, Hunger, War and Plague in full gallop heading out into the world. Jiří Anderle extracted from the whole composition mainly dramatic expressions and gestures of the participating characters and placed them in contrast to the minimalist line of the rest of the composition, thus escalating the tension and adding to the whole theme of menacingness.
