The impressive statue of the Czech two-tailed lion is the work of sculptor Karel Štipl by the design of Slovenian architect Josip Plečnik, who reconstructed Prague Castle during the presidency of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk. Karel Štipl was a pupil of Josef Drahoňovský and Josip Plečnik, he collaborated on many important projects of the First Republic: the interior of Kramářova villa, residential buildings in Hanspaulka and Dejvice or the coat of arms on the Jan Ámos Komenský memorial in Naarden.
