Corrado Giaquinto, regarded as the supreme representative of Rococo painting in Rome in the first half of the 18th century and an inspirational figure for various generations of Spanish painters, was a prolific artist not only in a number of oil paintings but especially in frescoes. His most ambitious artistic projects were the decoration of the Royal Palace, where he was responsible for the design of stuccoes, sculptures and painting projects. The paired allegorical paintings we know from Corrado Giaquinto's repertoire are representative of Rococo iconography and feature the themes of Pallas Athena and Justice. Great attention is paid here to both the attributes and the eyes of the two women, who gaze defiantly into space. Both paintings show a flair for a certain drama, and their bodies, armour and drapery emerge from the shadows into the soft light.
