The work of Miloslav Hájek brings with it a combination of modern elements with archaizing ones. The morphology of his sculptures cannot be denied the lines of modernity or expressive lyricism. In particular, Hájek's faces often have a dreamy impression and with their dramatic poses and cubist form, they represent a subtle and elegant direction in the modernist approach of the May 57 group, which subscribed to the legacy of Picasso, Matisse, Derain, Cubist, Filla, Zrzavý, Kremlička, Šíma and Tichý. The portrait of a girl with her head in her hands was subjected to several treatments by Miloslav Hájek, the submitted work Sleeping and Awake is an original plaster model of the subsequently created bronze sculptures. The statue is situated in space due to the two-sided concept, where one face has eyes open, while on the other side the eyes are closed.
